Is This Roofing or Organized Crime?

Today I want to share a perfect example of why we exist as a company. The roofing and exterior restoration industry has become effectively organized crime. I was called by a local Baldwin City resident to evaluate a chimney that wasn't done correctly on a recently replaced roof. The work was performed by a nationwide "award winning" company. The awards are from manufacturers for selling products, not for doing good work.

They knocked this unsuspecting victim's door, convinced them that they had hail damage on their two year old roof, and somehow convinced insurance to replace the roof. Baldwin City hasn't had a damaging hail storm in many years, and there is no chance whatsoever that there was hail damage on that roof. I can't tell you for sure what happened, but insurance should have never approved this.

Upon evaluation I noted numerous immediate functional defects in the installed roofing system. There is a laundry list of issues such as:

- Double the amount of exhaust ventilation needed resulting in negative pressure in the attic, which pulls moisture in instead of venting it out of the attic.

- None of the ridge cap has starter pieces installed at the ends so it has no seal on the edges. This will blow off.

- The chimney was damaged and not flashed properly at all.

- Numerous exposed nails or "shiners" as we call them, in field shingles which will leak.

- The entire roof deck is plywood that is delaminated and needed to be replaced. The roof deck was crunching under my feet all over the place. You never roof over a bad deck.

This is after they had returned three times to correct things. Now this victim, who had a perfectly good roof prior, has to get yet another roof replacement to cure these issues properly. Always be wary of door knocking roofers. There is a reason they do that, instead of having their phones ringing. We are always here for free and ethical evaluations and estimates!
